Ringing in the New Year at Home

Every year, after holiday plans have fallen into place, lists are crossed out, and shopping starts winding down, my thoughts start turning to New Year's Eve. And every year I am faced the same dilemma- go out or stay in? If you're like me and have small children, you know how hard it can be to find a babysitter for that night. We usually opt for celebrating at home, which is a ton of fun!

There are many simple and creative ideas for ringing in the New Year at home with friends and family. Don't forget to make it easy on yourself and use PerfectPotluck.com to coordinate all of the food and drinks.

Decorations

Consider doing a balloon drop. This has been a huge hit in our home. We usually do a countdown at 8pm (much more realistic than midnight these days!) and let the balloons fall. We've used a soccer net in the past but there are balloon drop kits you can buy. Here are step by step instructions.
Lay out fun things for your guests to put on, like necklaces from the dollar store, sunglasses, and these cute new year hats! The more silly the better!
Have leftover wrapping paper? Turn it into these festive shimmering streamers.

Games

Our New Year's Eve party always includes some kind of competition. Sometimes it's families vs. families but last year we did guys vs. girls. We had such fun and the kids really got into it. Play a game of NYE-inspired charades or musical chairs. Treasure hunts always go over well. Whatever you do, make sure you have the losing team do something memorable. Last year, the girls were the victors and the boys (dads included) had to sing "I'm a Little Teapot" loudly in front of everyone (and definitely in front of a few phone cameras!).
Take stock of the past year and chat together about your dreams for 2018. There are a few free printables out there or come up with your own.

Food

It wouldn't be New Years without a toast! Pick up plastic champagne flutes at the Dollar Store and let the kids join in the fun with this adorable and tasty adaptation! (See photo above)
Ask your guests to contribute to the food and drinks. Here are some festive ideas for a traditional menu. Or a themed meal, like a taco bar or make your own salad bar, might be a welcome choice after all the heavy holiday dinners.
