Caring for Someone with the Flu
"Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food" ~ Hippocrates
Chances are, you or someone you know has been in contact with the dangerous strain of the flu that is going around this year. And unfortunately, flu season isn't over yet; the CDC says that flu activity peaks between December and March and can even last into May.
Here are some ways you can care for your own family or someone else who is dealing with this nasty seasonal illness. Sadly, not much can be done to shorten flu symptoms, but these ideas are sure to brighten up some miserable days.
- Take them chicken soup, of course! There's a reason why homemade soup is the first thing we think of making for someone who is sick. Besides being delicious, chicken bones cooked for hours are proven to release the nutrients from the bones, releasing immune boosting vitamins and minerals. This recipe is delicious with noodles or rice.
- Take them drinks. You typically don't want to eat anything when you have the flu, but staying hydrated is a must. Orange juice, ginger ale, and green tea are excellent choices to provide hydration as well as helpful vitamins and antioxidants.
- Take them popsicles. Store bought or homemade, ice pops are a comforting treat for a sore throat. Bonus points for using fresh fruit.
- Take them a tea basket. A basket with cold- and flu-fighting gifts would bring a smile to someone that's achy. Include soothing teas, honey, ginger, lemon and Vitamin C or cough drops. The DIY Mommy has some great ideas and super cute free printables.
- Take a meal to the family. A few weeks ago a friend and I teamed up to take a meal to a family where both of the parents had the flu. Even if they couldn't enjoy it that evening, we knew their kids would. We made extra so that they could have leftovers. My friend left the meal on their doorstep to avoid any potential spreading of germs. Don't forget the paper plates so there aren't any dishes to worry about.
